Rugby

Rugby is a team sport that originated in England in the early 19th century. It is played with an oval-shaped ball and can be played in two main forms: Rugby Union and Rugby League, each with its own set of rules and number of players. The main objective of the game is to score points by carrying the ball across the opponent’s goal line, touching it down to earn a try, or by kicking it through the opponent’s goalposts for a conversion, penalty, or drop goal.

Rugby is characterized by a combination of physical strength, strategic gameplay, and teamwork. Players can pass the ball to teammates, but may only pass it laterally or backward; forward progression is achieved primarily by running with the ball or kicking it. The game is known for its continuous play and is played on a rectangular field known as a pitch. Rugby also emphasizes sportsmanship and camaraderie, encapsulated in the motto “rugby is a game for gentlemen.” The sport has a global following and is governed by World Rugby, with international competitions like the Rugby World Cup showcasing the highest level of play.
